The Artist Of The Month

Anwar Al Rahbi

     By Marian Ismaeel

Expressionism is more than a style; it’s a concept of life, a serious and deep contemplation of the world. Expressionism is the way the artist conveys and reflects himself on nature, events and fellow humans.
That is exactly how Anwar Al Rahbi deals with art through his paintings.
He dives deep to analyse society as a whole and then he transforms his impressions in a delicate sad song in his canvas as a painting.

Anwar Al Rahbi was born in Deir Al Zour city, where almost everything in nature appears to be tinted in yellow; this city is his main inspiration for his paintings. The folklore, the traditions and the environment of the region are mixed in Al Rahbi own personal world with reality and fantasy, and throughout a plastic artistic language these items are extended widely on canvas.
The figures in his paintings come out from behind a shadow to announce their presence and tell stories, human incidents and memories. Female figures are the most appropriate vehicles for Al Rahbi to express him as a human being, as an artist and as a witness of the simply beautiful and magical world hiding under the name of "Deir Al Zour".

Al Rahbi paintings are typically set at night as this is most appropriate time for revelations and secret sharing. It is the time for revealing ancient stories, for love and passion and, above all, it is the time where females have greater freedom to open their hearts and reveal their intimate secrets.
While in his compositions there is always a reference for a place, a specific place where female figures belong to and wear accessories, embroidered clothes and veils with ornaments, these ornaments differ from woman to woman because all women have great similarities but at the same time are very different and this is reflected in his paintings by the sophistication on their veils: the greater the ornaments on her veils, the more stories and secrets they can reveal.

Al Rahbi paintings sourround the subject with peace and tranquility. Women are generally depicted during their time of meditation and their dreams. They are either silent or play a sad tune, and despite the fact they are nearly always shadowed with dark blue colour; they still manage to find their inner peace and show us their beauty.

All women are individuals but every female represents a story, a unic case. There is  a women that holds the apple of knowledge while another woman may be holding a mask, a musical instrument or dead fish.

Anwar Al Rahbi uses acrylic colours as a technique, his strokes are soft, his lines flow smoothly and he manages to create free spaces that invade the backgrounds of his paintings. The artist has a very good technique in the use of colours, especially when it comes to the transition from worm colours to cold colours; they are thick, rich and expressive to give form to his personal affections and impressions and contribute decisively to attain harmony and aesthetic ecstasy.
