‘Shamat’
is Lena Chamamyan’s second album
featuring nine songs that’ll put you in a trance and
should be accompanied with candles and perhaps a
glass of wine! This girl is the new Syrian diva with
stage-presence and charisma I can only describe as
jaw dropping! Extremely well spoken, confident, and
with a voice that’ll stir goosebumps on your skin,
Lena’s folkloric choice of music narrates all that
was and is, Syria.
Her album launching took place at al-Hamra
Theater on May 14th and was packed with fans that
cheered, whistled, requested encores and gave her
the standing ovation she clearly deserved. The album
touched upon many social issues and strife youths
suffer today. For example, ‘Yomma Lala’ is about two
lovers who grew weary of their families interfering
in their relationship and hindering their future
together. Another song ‘Cha’am’ is a heartbreaking
tale of a young woman who’s at a crossroads in life
and has to leave her beloved country in order to
fulfill her dreams. Extremely heartfelt
‘Shamat’
renders the
talents ofvocalist
Lena Chamamyan
and
Basel Rajoub, the genius behind
the making.
According to Lena, Shamat (aka moles
or beauty marks) are the most beautiful part
of the face, and like them, the songs in her album
illustrate the most beautiful parts
of ‘Bilad al-Sham’s’ folklore and tradition.
